Drop Zone
Definition: A Drop Zone is a designated area on a disc golf course from which a player makes the next throw under specified conditions. A Drop Zone is considered a lie and may be marked and played like a teeing area or like a marked lie. Tournament Directors commonly establish Drop Zones for missed mandatory routes, out-of-bounds areas, required relief areas, casual areas, or other situations identified in the course rules. A teeing area may also serve as a Drop Zone. PDGA Rule 802.05
Why It Matters: A Drop Zone provides a clear and consistent location for continuing play after a particular rule or course condition applies. Depending on the situation, proceeding to the Drop Zone may be required or may be one of several available options. A penalty throw may also apply, but the penalty comes from the rule governing the situation—not simply from using the Drop Zone. Players should review the tee sign, caddie book, course rules, and Tournament Director instructions to understand when a Drop Zone must or may be used.
