Grip

Grip is the way a disc golf player positions the fingers, thumb, and palm on the disc to control it during the throwing motion and through the release. The grip may vary depending on whether the player is throwing backhand, forehand, putting, approaching, or attempting a specialty shot. Common grips include the power grip, fan grip, modified fan grip, and forehand grip. A good grip secures the disc firmly enough to resist slipping while still allowing it to release cleanly at the intended point, angle, and speed.

Grip affects power, spin, accuracy, nose angle, release angle, distance, and consistency. A grip that is too loose may cause the disc to slip out early, wobble, or lose speed and spin. A grip that is excessively tight may create tension in the hand, wrist, forearm, and shoulder, interfere with timing, and contribute to griplock or a late release. The most effective grip provides secure contact and balanced pressure while allowing the wrist and arm to move naturally. Because hand size, finger length, disc rim width, plastic type, and throwing style differ among players, the best grip is one that feels comfortable, controlled, and repeatable.

  • Backhand power throws commonly use a power grip, with the fingers curled beneath the rim to create strong contact and resist the disc’s outward pull.
  • Fan grips spread some or all of the fingers beneath the flight plate and are often used for putts, approach shots, and controlled throws.
  • Forehand grips typically place one or two fingers against the inside of the rim while the thumb applies pressure from above.
