Spin Rate
Definition: Spin rate is the rotational speed of a disc around its center during flight, commonly measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Spin gives the disc angular momentum and gyroscopic stability, resisting changes in tilt as aerodynamic forces act upon it. Spin rate influences how steadily the disc maintains its orientation and intended flight path. A clean throw combines sufficient spin with forward speed, release angle, nose angle, and proper disc selection.
Why It Matters: Spin rate affects flight stability, consistency, wobble, turn, fade, and control. At the same forward speed, a disc with more spin generally resists rolling or changing its angle, allowing it to hold its flight orientation longer. A disc released with insufficient spin may wobble, lose stability, turn or fade unpredictably, and fall out of the air sooner. More spin does not automatically make a disc overstable or guarantee additional distance; the result depends on how spin interacts with speed, disc design, release angle, nose angle, wind, and off-axis torque.
