A-Tier
Definition: An A-Tier is a high-level sanctioned disc golf tournament which is a major step above B-Tier competition in scale, structure, field strength, scheduling importance, and event expectations. A-Tiers are often large regional, national, or high-prestige events that attract strong amateur and professional fields. An A-Tier generally involves greater tournament preparation, stronger course standards, more formal administration, and higher player commitment than either a B-Tier or C-Tier.
Why It Matters: A-Tiers provide serious competitors with a demanding tournament environment below the level of Elite Series and Major events. They allow advanced amateurs and professionals to test themselves against deeper fields, stronger competition, and more formal tournament conditions. For tournament directors, host clubs, and disc golf venues, an A-Tier is a significant event that can showcase the course, attract traveling players, build regional visibility, and demonstrate the ability to manage a large-scale sanctioned tournament.
Term Observations:
- A-Tier describes the level of the tournament, not the division of the player. An A-Tier may include professional divisions such as MPO and FPO, amateur divisions such as MA1, MA2, and FA divisions, and age-protected divisions depending on the event.
- A-Tiers are generally more demanding than B-Tiers in scheduling, staffing, course preparation, payout or player-pack expectations, scoring procedures, player communication, and overall tournament administration.
- An A-Tier often draws a stronger and wider field than a B-Tier, including highly rated amateurs, touring professionals, and players who travel for higher-level competition.
- A-Tiers are proving grounds for players preparing for Elite Series, Major, or championship-level competition.
