Ace
Definition: An ace is a hole-in-one: the player completes the hole with a single throw from the tee for a score of one. The disc must finish in the basket; a glorious crash of chains followed by a rollaway is still an unfinished hole. Skill, a well-chosen line, and sometimes a friendly bit of fortune come together in one throw. The score is small. The reaction rarely is.
Why It Matters: An ace removes every approach and putt from the hole and replaces them with a moment players may remember for years. On a par 3, that score of one is two under par. It can change a competitive round, ignite a card’s celebration, or turn an ordinary afternoon into a story with a permanent place in the rotation.
It also illustrates a useful distinction: a throw aimed at the chains may carry well beyond the basket if it misses. Chasing the unforgettable shot can put the otherwise comfortable score at risk.
Term Observations:
- Players call reachable opportunities “ace runs,” but not every reachable basket is a sensible target to attack. Length, angles, obstacles, and the landing area behind the basket determine how expensive a miss might be.
- An ace pool or “ace pot” adds a separate reward. Players generally buy in before play, and eligible aces earn a payout under the event’s rules. Multiple winners, rollovers, and unclaimed funds need an announced plan; the chains cannot settle the accounting.
- Dedicated ace challenges bring that excitement outside a normal course round. At Lula Disc House, the floating basket on Hilltop Pond offers a local example: players use floating “mermaid” discs to attack a water-surrounded target. It offers the thrill of a one-throw make, while a special challenge’s results and prizes follow its own format.
- “One throw on the scorecard; a lifetime in the retelling.” Aces become shared memories, and the people who witnessed the shot often remember the line, the sound, and who started yelling first.
- A tree-assisted ace is still a wonderful story. Whether the disc followed your perfect line or received an unexpected redirect, a completed tee shot for a score of one is an ace. Artistic merit does not need a separate scorecard.
