Alternate Shot

Definition: Alternate Shot is a team format in which teammates take turns throwing until the hole is completed. One player makes the tee throw, the other player throws from the resulting lie, and the players continue alternating throws regardless of the quality or location of each shot. Unlike Best Shot, teammates do not both throw and select the preferred result. The team plays only one disc sequence, so every throw determines the lie the next teammate must play.

Why It Matters: Alternate Shot requires teamwork, communication, adaptability, and trust. Each player must consider not only the immediate result of a throw but also the type of lie, distance, and shot shape that may be left for the teammate. A poor throw cannot be replaced by a second attempt from the other player, while a well-placed throw may allow the teammate to attack the basket. Because partners alternate throws, players may be required to attempt unfamiliar shots from difficult lies or under considerable competitive pressure.

Term Observations:

Alternate Shot may be used in doubles, team competition, Match Play, or Stroke Play.
The throwing order generally continues throughout the hole, with teammates alternating after every throw.
Tournament rules should specify which teammate tees first and whether teeing order changes or alternates between holes.
A player may intentionally choose a conservative placement shot to leave the teammate a comfortable next throw.
Penalty throws add to the team’s score but generally do not change which teammate makes the next actual throw.
Modified Alternate Shot usually allows both teammates to make the initial tee throw before one result is selected and alternating play begins.
Successful Alternate Shot teams understand each partner’s preferred distances, throwing styles, strengths, and limitations.
