B-Tier
Definition: A B-Tier is a sanctioned disc golf tournament that represents a step above C-Tier competition in scale, structure, field strength, and event expectations. B-Tiers are often strong local, state-level, or regional events that attract experienced amateur and professional competitors while remaining more accessible than A-Tier, Elite Series, or Major events. A B-Tier involves greater tournament preparation, stronger player commitments, and more formal administration than a C-Tier.
Why It Matters: B-Tiers provide a bridge between ordinary local tournament play and higher-level regional or national competition. They afford developing players the opportunity to test themselves against stronger fields while still competing in an event that is more approachable than an A-Tier or Major. For tournament directors and disc golf communities, B-Tiers elevate local competition, attract traveling players, and build the experience needed to host larger events.
Term Observations:
- B-Tier describes the level of the tournament, not the division of the player. A B-Tier may include amateur divisions such as MA3, MA2, MA1, FA divisions, and professional divisions depending on the event.
- A B-Tier often draws a stronger and wider field than a C-Tier, including players who are willing to travel.
- B-Tiers serve as an important proving ground for players to move beyond local events and prepare for A-Tier or championship-level competition.
- Although B-Tiers are below A-Tiers in the tournament hierarchy, they can still be highly competitive, well-attended, and significant within a state or regional disc golf scene.
- B-Tiers are generally more demanding than C-Tiers in scope, scheduling, staffing, payout structure, course preparation, and tournament administration.
