Basket Placement

Basket Placement is the selection of the basket’s location on a disc golf hole. It includes the basket’s distance and angle from the tee, relationship to the intended fairway and landing zones, elevation, surrounding terrain, nearby trees and vegetation, and proximity to slopes, water, out-of-bounds areas, and other obstacles. Good basket placement rewards appropriate distance, accuracy, and shot selection while providing a fair target and a suitable area for putting.

Basket placement determines how a hole finishes and often shapes how the entire hole is played. A basket placed behind trees, near a drop-off, on a slope, or close to out-of-bounds may require players to choose between an aggressive approach and a safer landing area. Poor basket placement can create unfair results, excessive rollaways, unsafe play, erosion, or a putting area that relies more on chance than skill. On the other hand, thoughtful basket placement creates meaningful decisions, distinguishes accurate shots from inaccurate ones, rewards controlled approaches, and gives the hole a clear strategic identity.

  • Basket placement should complement the fairway and intended flight path rather than compensate for an otherwise uninteresting hole.
  • A basket does not need to be surrounded by obstacles to create challenge; elevation, distance, angles, slopes, and guarded approaches can all influence play.
  • Placement near steep slopes, water, or out-of-bounds can create risk and reward, but the potential penalty should be proportionate to the skill required.
  • Multiple basket placements can provide variety, alter scoring difficulty, distribute wear, and allow a hole to serve players of different skill levels.
  • Good basket placement considers visibility, putting space, drainage, erosion, player safety, and movement from the basket to the next tee.
