Release Point

Release Point is the position at which the disc leaves a player’s hand during a throw or putt. It describes where the disc separates from the grip in relation to the player’s body and throwing motion. Release point works with timing, release angle, nose angle, and throwing direction to shape the beginning of the disc’s flight. A good release point is appropriate for the intended shot and repeatable when the player wants to throw that shot again.

Release point affects accuracy, trajectory, gap control, and consistency. Releasing too early or too late can send the disc away from the intended line, while releasing too high or too low can affect clearance over obstacles and the flight toward the target. An inconsistent release point makes even familiar shots difficult to repeat. A dependable release point helps the player hit wooded gaps, control approach shots, and putt with confidence.

  • Release point is important to all throws, including backhand throws, forehand throws, approach shots, putting, and standstill throws.
  • Release point describes where the disc leaves the hand; release angle describes the disc’s orientation as it leaves.
  • The appropriate release point changes with the throwing style, intended trajectory, and obstacles around the lie.
  • Early release and griplock can send shots off line, but the direction of the miss depends on the throwing hand and throwing style.
  • Consistent balance, footwork, grip pressure, and timing help produce a reliable release point without forcing the player to consciously open the hand at a particular instant.
