Course Layout

Definition: Course Layout is the physical arrangement and sequence of holes on a disc golf course. It includes the locations and orientations of tee pads, fairways, landing zones, baskets, transitions, paths, practice areas, and other course features. A good course layout uses the available land efficiently while creating logical movement, safe separation, clear navigation, varied hole directions, and an enjoyable progression from the first tee through the final basket.

Why It Matters: Course layout affects safety, flow, navigation, variety, pace of play, accessibility, and the overall player experience. A well-planned layout reduces conflicts between fairways, walking paths, roads, buildings, property boundaries, and other park users. It also limits unnecessary walks, confusing transitions, backups, and opportunities for players to interfere with one another. Effective layouts use changes in terrain, vegetation, elevation, and direction to make the course feel varied and connected. Poor layouts may produce repetitive holes, dangerous crossing fairways, long transitions, difficult navigation, congestion, or an awkward return to parking and other facilities.
