Fan Grip

Definition: Fan Grip is a way of holding a disc in which the fingers spread beneath the flight plate while the thumb presses against the top. Unlike a power grip, which gathers the fingers against the inside rim, a fan grip provides broader support beneath the disc. Finger placement varies, particularly around the rim, but the purpose is a comfortable, secure hold that supports touch and a controlled release.

Why It Matters: Fan Grip helps players control the disc on shots where placement matters more than maximum distance. It is commonly used for putting and approach shots, where a clean release and a feel for the disc are especially useful. The grip should remain secure; spreading the fingers does not mean holding the disc loosely. Finding comfortable finger placement and suitable pressure helps the player deliver the disc smoothly on the intended angle.
