Tee Colors

Definition: Tee Colors are the color designations used to identify different tee locations or playing layouts on a disc golf course. These colors help players distinguish starting positions intended for different levels of skill and challenge. Alternate tees may change a hole’s distance, throwing angle, available lines, or required carry. Although established color conventions exist, courses do not all use the same system, so players should check the course signs or layout descriptions before beginning a round.

Why It Matters: Tee colors help players choose a layout suited to their ability, throwing distance, and desired challenge. Playing an appropriate layout can make a round more enjoyable while providing realistic opportunities to develop skills. Recognizing the correct tee also helps players follow the intended course layout, record scores accurately, and avoid confusion when several starting positions serve the same hole.

Term Observations:

The PDGA’s course-design guidelines identify five skill levels, progressing from Green through Red, White, Blue, and Gold as the intended level of play increases.
A course may offer only two tee colors or use a local color system. The colors should be interpreted according to that course’s signs and instructions.
A more demanding tee is not necessarily directly behind an easier tee. Its position may introduce a tighter gap, a different shot shape, or a more challenging approach to the basket.
Tee colors indicate layout choices rather than restrictions based on a player’s age or gender. During organized competition, players should follow the layout assigned to their division.
Tee colors and basket colors may identify different things. Confirm both the starting position and the intended basket when a hole offers multiple options.
